I was first introduced to beeswax wraps while visiting friends in Plett two years ago. The dynamic young couple using them are passionate about looking after the planet and ridding the universe of plastic pollution. They have dedicated their lives to educating South Africans to rethink their lifestyle shopping choices into making the planet a cleaner and safer environment for future generations.
Their enthusiasm and positive energy made an impact on me, and I thought that I too could make a small contribution by offering South Africans a greener solution to packaging and plastic.
I decided to come up with a range of food coverings that eliminated the need for single use plastics. I researched products that were available locally and decided to use my textile background to create a fun range of wraps, bags and elasticated covers.
The designs are all from original artworks, and some are hand painted and some printed.
After testing and creating hundreds of recipes, we finally found the right combination that gave our wraps the desired waxiness and feel to protect food while maximising the sealing potential. They were also put through numerous care tests to ensure they performed to our required standards.
The fabrics are all made from 100% natural fibres, the beeswax is local and the jojoba and resin are completely natural making them compostable and biodegrade-able. Beeswax and jojoba oil have natural antibacterial properties that are food safe. Our products are locally made in Cape Town where we have started to create employment while contributing to keeping our landfills and oceans free of plastic.
